NS 154
Title:  NS 154
Description:  At 10:49am on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, northbound mixed freight train 154 passed Amour Yard, near downtown Atlanta, Georgia, with one of the newest units to the Norfolk Southern roster as a distributed power unit. NS #3990 (AC4400CW) was purchased by NS in August of 2023, part of a group of 36 former CEFX leasing GE AC4400CW locomotives from CIT Rail. This was the first one that I shot.

AMTK19
Title:  AMTK19
Description:  Arriving at 9:33am, making it 2 hours and 8 minutes late, southbound Amtrak train #19, The Crescent, pulls into the depot in Gainesville, Georgia on the crisp morning of Sunday, January 23, 2022. Behind lead engine AMTK #56 (P42DC) is the freshly painted 50th Anniversary Operation Lifesaver Inc. engine, AMTK #203 (P42DC). This edition of the train also featured a Pennsylvania Railroad private car on the rear, RPCX 8404 "Catalpa Falls" (RPCX 800030), a six-double-bedroom/buffet/lounge..

72 Year Old EMD and Scrap GE Cabs
Title:  72 Year Old EMD and Scrap GE Cabs
Description:  QUITTIN' TIME: It's 5:13pm on Friday, November 12, 2021, and it's quittin' time at Midwest Steel and Alloy Corporation in Youngstown, Ohio. The engineer of MSAX #501 (SW1) drops off two scrap yard laborers who hitched a ride to the parking lot on his way back to the scale track to tie down for the night. MSAX #501 was built in April of 1949 for the Pennsylvania Railroad as PRR #9208. It later became Penn Central #8508, then Conrail #8508 (which you can still make out on the cab), before eventually ending up at Midwest Steel. On the trip from the scrap yard to the scale track, this 72-year-old EMD just passed the cut-up GE cabs of CSX #7675 (C40-8W; built 5/91), UP #9204 (C40-8; built 8/88), CSX #7749 (C40-8W; built 11/91), CSX #7514 (C40-8; built 6/89), and at least six other unidentifiable GE units. In terms of the forever-old EMD vs GE debate, it's a photo like this that makes EMD look superior (because they are).

Last Christmas - Scrap Yard Edition
Title:  Last Christmas - Scrap Yard Edition
Description:  LAST CHRISTMAS: At least seven GE locomotive cabs are about to spend their "Last Christmas" at Midwest Steel and Alloy in Youngstown, Ohio. Unlike the group Wham!'s popular Christmas hit, this story is not as upbeat. In this December 24, 2021 view, CSXT #7675 (C40-8W), and four additional unidentifiable Union Pacific C40-8Ws, join Ohio Central #7133 (C36-7; classed by OHCR as C30-7) and OHCR #7131 (C36-7; classed by OHCR as C30-7; still in Conrail paint) in front of a pile of Union Pacific yellow and CSX blue scrap. While Midwest Steel still uses a 1950s era Pennsylvania Railroad SW1 to move cars around, these seven GE cabs built from June of 1985 to the early 1990s are about to become "razor blades."

NS GZ04
Title:  NS GZ04
Description:  In a growing, bustling city like Atlanta, Georgia, being environmentally friendly is important. Norfolk Southern plays a good neighbor by operating local train GZ04 with two eco-friendly locomotives. On Thursday June 18, 2020, GP33ECO #4716 and RP-M4C Slug #656 head south through Howell Wye in downtown Atlanta, Georgia with 20 cars. These units were partially funded with federal and state grants for use in the Atlanta area.

NS G88
Title:  NS G88
Description:  Just before 10am on Thursday April 16, 2020, southbound intermodal local G88 knocked the signal down at CP Austell in Austell, Georgia with NS #3511 (SD40-2) and NS #6220 (SD33ECO). G88 shuttles intermodal cars from Austell Intermodal Terminal, which it just departed here, to the nearby Inman Yard, a distance of roughly 14 railroad miles. NS #3511 is a rare breed on NS (and becoming even more rare), as it is one of the few SD40-2s with its headlight on the nose.

NS 02T - Amtrak Capitol Limited 30
Title:  NS 02T - Amtrak Capitol Limited 30
Description:  Amtrak engineer D. Embler Jr. gets logged into his PTC screens during the station stop of Amtrak’s eastbound Capitol Limited, train #30, in Toledo, Ohio just after 11:45pm on Tuesday January 7, 2020. During this stop, the conductor and engineer swap with a fresh crew, and now it is Embler’s responsibility to advance the train from Toledo to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as safely and efficiently as possible. Freshly repainted AMTK #837 (P40DC) and not so fresh AMTK #58 (P42DC), along with their eight cars, are showing on time in Toledo, despite leaving Chicago Union Station roughly 30 minutes behind due to a cab signal failure and having to spin the locomotives at the last minute. Embler is one of Amtrak’s most qualified engineers (and one of the best, in my opinion). Hired as a fireman with Penn Central June 19, 1974, Embler was promoted to engineer in Conrail’s very first class of engineers on June 30, 1976. He switched over to Amtrak, starting in Boston, Massachusetts on August 18, 1984.

NS 39Q
Title:  NS 39Q
Description:  At 2:35pm on Wednesday August 16, 2017, westbound mixed freight train 39Q crossed the Stone Bridge in Johnstown, Pennsylvania with NS #6920 (SD60E; Honoring Our Veterans unit), NS #9533 (C44-9W), NS #7254 (SD70ACu), NS #2631 (SD70M), and NS #6302 (SD40E). NS #6310 (SD40E) and NS #6301 (SD40E) were on the rear. The bridge is a seven-arch stone bridge spanning the Conemaugh River and was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad between 1887 and 1888. This bridge survived the massive Johnston Flood of 1889 and blocked debris caught in flood waters, which caught fire creating an inferno covering 30 acres.

NS 60N meets NS 64K
Title:  NS 60N meets NS 64K
Description:  Traffic was running irregularly this evening in Tyrone, Pennsylvania. Trains were running opposite main and all of the westbounds we saw were literally crawling past us. One even stopped, blocking the crossing briefly. Amtrak was forced to do station work on track two, the track that is not next to the platform. They unloaded passengers in the middle of the railroad crossing, which is pretty unusual to see. At 5:15pm on Thursday August 18, 2017, eastbound loaded ethanol train 64K crawled around the bend at the Amtrak Station in Tyrone, Pennsylvania. Seven minutes later, it finally crawled to a halt, just as we heard a westbound train, moving at track speed, blowing for the railroad crossing. At 5:22pm, westbound loaded slab train 60N rounded the curve in Tyrone with NS #9592 (C44-9W) and NS #2571 (SD70). Even though it's just a dash nine, I really like this shot!

Title:  CSX 7597 and Others Scrapped
Description:  A sad CSX reunion of sorts is taking place at Metalico Scrap in Brier Hill, Ohio in this March 27, 2017 photo. Several CSX C40-8s were piled amongst the scrap, including CSX #7597, pictured here on the left. CSX #7597 was built in June of 1990. Also amongst the pile, I found the cab number for Canadian Pacific #5612 (SD40-2). Though I am not sure, I would guess that the standard cap nose on the right is from this unit. All of these units were trucked here from Larrys Truck and Electric (LTEX).

NS C90
Title:  NS C90
Description:  While this photo looks like a poorly photoshopped train coming out of the snow, I swear this actually is real. With NS #7204 (SD80MAC), NS #7201 (SD80MAC), NS #7200 (SD80MAC) on the west end, an empty coal train using the symbol C90 kicks the snow off the rails as it heads to the mine to load on Friday March 10, 2017. The train is making a reverse move off of the Pittsburgh Line to load at the Sonman Mine in Portage, Pennsylvania. To get to the coal tipple, the train operates push-pull style, and has NS #7209 (SD80MAC) and NS #7214 (SD80MAC) on the east end of the train. On July 15, 1940, a mine explosion occurred at the Sonman Shaft Coal Company. Sixty-three miners died out of the estimated ninety trapped in the mine after the initial explosion.

Title:  AOSX 460 on OHIC
Description:  At 4:49pm on Friday, May 13, 2016, Ohi-Rail in Minerva, Ohio made a reverse move out to the Norfolk Southern interchange in Bayard, Ohio. For the past year, OHIC has been borrowing two units from Jerry Jacobsons Age of Steam Roundhouse. Here, an OHIC crew shoves four flats and two covered hoppers, plus ex-Conrail caboose turned shoving platform, through "downtown" Minerva with AOSX #460, an F40M-2C. AOSX #460 was built in 1977 as Amtrak #269 (F40PHR), which became Canadian-American Railroad #460, and then Ohio Central #460.

NS 11V
Title:  NS 11V
Description:  At 3:13pm on Friday July 15, 2016, westbound mixed freight train 11V struggled up the mountain rounding Horseshoe Curve. The trailing unit, NS #9789 (C40-9W) crapped out shortly leaving Altoona, leaving leading engine NS #8436 (C40-8W) as the sole head end power. Despite having a helper set on the rear, NS #6322 (SD40E) and NS #6323 (SD40E), the train maxxed out at 8mph climbing the hill. It took the train 10 minutes to round the curve. Apparently, it made it to Bennington Curve and stalled. It was a huge train!

Erie 2924 K-5
Title:  Erie 2924 K-5
Description:  Here we have an incredible Erie Railroad in Youngstown photo taken almost 75 years ago to this day! Its September 12, 1941 as this westbound Erie passenger train pauses downtown. The fireman is standing on the tender of Erie K-5 #2924 taking on water with the original St. Columba Cathedral looking over on top of the hill. Everything in this photo is gone. What looks to be six tracks in this photo - all gone today. St. Columba is gone as well, suffering a fire from a lightning strike in 1954. The new St. Columba, built in the same location, does not compare to this beautiful structure. Photo taken by G. A. Doeright of Poland, Ohio, from the James Pope collection.

NS 22W Meets NS 21V
Title:  NS 22W Meets NS 21V
Description:  I still cant believe how amazing the world famous Horseshoe Curve in Altoona, Pennsylvania looks! Following extensive tree trimming in the spring of 2016, the entire view of the curve is visible, making images like this possible. On Friday June 24, 2016, eastbound van train 22W drifts downgrade towards downtown Altoona, PA on track one while westbound intermodal 21V climbs the grade on track two. Description:  It's Sunday August 18, 1957 as Nickel Plate Road Berkshire #731 sits on the service tracks in Bellevue, Ohio. None of the NKP's 80 Berkshires were built with Mars lights. The bracket and Mars light were added to brand new 779 in 1949 for the Chicago Railroad Fair. The entire fleet of 112 Berkshires got them in 1950-51 and ran with them on until the end of steam in 1958. In less than a year, all steam on the NKP would be done. Photo by Jim Pope.

CSX Q137 with CNW 8626
Title:  CSX Q137 with CNW 8626
Description:  In 1995 (the year I was born), the Union Pacific Railroad bought out the remaining shares of the Chicago and North Western Transportation Co. (CNW) for over $1.2 billion. Twenty years later, two of the last order of units purchased by the CNW (in May of 1994) still roam the rails wearing their unpatched CNW paint. After catching CNW #8701 in August of 2014, I am happy say that after Friday, April 17, 2015, I have photographed both of the last two unpatched Chicago and Northwestern C44-9Ws! Friday afternoon I chased CNW #8646 from Youngstown to Akron. At 1:21pm, westbound intermodal train Q137 passed through Youngstown, Ohio with one of the two last originally painted Chicago and Northwestern locomotives in the lead. CNW #8626 (C44-9W) and CSX #5369 (ES40DC) are seen approaching Center Street in Youngstown, Ohio.

CSX R410
Title:  CSX R410
Description:  At 5:57pm on Monday, August 17, 2015, westbound CSX train R410 began to turn north onto Norfolk Southerns Youngstown Line via the Center Street connection track as it passed under the East Federal Street bridge in Youngstown, Ohio with four ex-Florida East Coast Railway SD70M-2s in transit to new rails. The units, originally on lease to FEC, are on their way to the northern states after their lease from EMD expired in early 2015. The four units were purchased by leasing company FURX, which will split the units with Providence and Worcester and the Vermont Railway (two for each). After spending their lives thus far on the sunny, warm, Florida East Coast, being reassigned to the northeast, known for its massive snow storms, is worse than a death sentence. The power for R410 was CSX #960 (ES44AH), CSX #7547 (C40-8), and CSX #8352 (SD40-2), which was pulling FURX #101 (SD70M-2), FURX #100 (SD70M-2), FURX #102 (SD70M-2), and FURX #103 (SD70M-2). Also, CSX #8352 was built as a straight SD40 in June of 1971 for the Clinchfield Railroad as number 3018.
